UNIT 50 Evaluation

DANCE SHOW 2016 - FAULTLINE

This is an evaluation of our dance show piece 'Fault line' which we performed in December. The theme of the piece was gangs and war violence which was portrayed through out the piece by using various dance techniques and staging such as splitting the group into two and having them face each other. Other methods consisted of partner scenes where we would get into couples and choreograph a few steps which symbolised a fight scene. Because we weren't given specific character roles we all just played members of the rival gangs.

An example of this is during one part we used a slitting the throat motion towards the other gang as a sign of aggression and violence. Another example is when we all crowded around a single member and continued by throwing clenched fists towards them in a punchy motion. All of these various types of movement combined, created a sense of aggression, anger and violence towards one another.

This consisted of creating a simulated fight scene through space with our partners until there was only one person left in the class. I think that the devised fight part i created with Harry went very well because it was in time and worked well. Also due to both our heights and statue it was more possible to us a wider range of moves and techniques such as lifts and roles which we did apply at the end of
the segment.

If i had to improve something when devising for a future show such as 'Our House', it would be the length of the part or section. I feel that sections like that should be longer and involve more space but this is also something that we can work on in the future such as rehearsals. I feel that i contributed in this class when devising the solo parts and the couples fight scene because i helped think of ideas and went along with what the group was saying. I also contributed by helping out my class mates if they were stuck on specific parts.

As a student I felt that I contributed towards the dance by devising a small segment with another student in solo part in the middle of the dance. One way which devised piece in my opinion  could have been improved by making the movements more varied and not as repetitive.

I used my physical skills through out the piece to the best of my ability. My strong points and most effective dance skills would have been my ability to lift my partners during dance sequences. This was used twice during the piece, the first time was with my couples part with Valencia where we did two lifts. I thought these were particularly good because they were smooth and executed properly and in time.
The second time was in the last sequence of the dance where I had a couples part with Harry where we had to choreograph a fight scene involving a lift at the end where I would pick him up onto my chest and drop him carefully as to symbolise throwing him in the last part of the fight.

I used these skills to communicate my character in the piece to the audience. For example, using the skill of strength to show that my character is a fighter and an aggressive member of the gang. Combined with other skills like emphasis and energy, my character was successfully portrayed as a powerful yet short tempered fighter within one of the gangs which fit very well within the theme of gang violence and war.
